Multimat’s Adventure Superlite 38 Body-Shape Regular Self-inflating Mat is a very packable, lightweight sleeping mat that offers great levels of insulation for backpackers looking to lighten their kit.

The tough 20D rip-stop polyester fabric is durable and lightweight. The mat also comes with a handy repair kit. The Superlite 38 features high quality foam inside, for lasting performance & maximum inflation, with diamond cut-outs to reduce the weight of the mat.

With extra thick foam at 38mm this mat has superior warmth and comfort over other self-inflating mats. The mat is effective to -15C, which is enough to handle all most situaions in the 4 seasons in the UK and Europe.

Multimat Adventure Superlite 38 – self-inflating full length mattress. The lightest 38mm full length self-inflating mat in the range – uses quality materials to keep weight to a minimum.

Our Verdict

Self-inflating mats are the most popular choice for backpackers because they provide a good level of comfort and insulation from the ground, in addition they are relatively light and compact when deflated and rolled.

The two superlite mats in the Multimat Adventure range use a slightly lighter weight face material than the others in the range which is how weight is saved – though they are still a robust unit. And for 2011 Multimat have changed the shape to eliminate wasted material at the corners of their mats – saving weight compared with previous models.

This mat is just over a centimetre thicker than it’s original counterpart. Extra comfort and a greater tog rating, for not much weight penalty.

ASTM R-Value:

From 2020, there is a new industry standard for measuring the R-value (level of insulation) of sleeping mats – ASTM F3340-18. This new standard is the sleeping mat equivalent to the EN rating for sleeping bags.

You can now directly compare the R-value of mats rated using the ASTM F3340-18 with confidence that is a fair and accurate comparison between mats. In simple terms, the higher the R-value, the warmer the mat.

In general terms, an R-value below 2.0 is for summer use, 2.0 to 4.0 is for cooler 3 season use and 4.0+ is for winter temperatures.
