Our Verdict

Weighing 1377g, it’s remarkably comfortable for a mat in this category, thanks to its 7.5cm thickness and supportive foam core. The Horizontal Delta Coring trims down unnecessary bulk while maintaining a cushioned feel, which I found particularly welcome when camping on uneven ground. The mat feels noticeably warmer than thinner options, with an R-value of 4.2 providing reassuring insulation for trips into the figures. 

I appreciated the straightforward XPEL Valve System—inflating was hassle-free, and deflating was simple. It packed down smaller than I’d expect for a self-inflating mat this thick, though it still takes up a bit more space than an ultralight airbed. That’s the trade-off for not needing to blow it up manually.

ASTM R-Value:

From 2020, there is a new industry standard for measuring the R-value (level of insulation) of sleeping mats – ASTM F3340-18. This new standard is the sleeping mat equivalent to the EN rating for sleeping bags.

You can now directly compare the R-value of mats rated using the ASTM F3340-18 with confidence that is a fair and accurate comparison between mats. In simple terms, the higher the R-value, the warmer the mat.

In general terms, an R-value below 2.0 is for summer use, 2.0 to 4.0 is for cooler 3 season use and 4.0+ is for winter temperatures.
