The Nordisk Grip 2.5 Regular is a lightweight, comfortable, compact self-inflating mat with zone construction and a push/pull valve.

The Grip 2.5 is an ultralight mat weighing just 340g with a pack size of 12×26 cm (regular) yet offering great insulation. The low weight and size are the result of three things:

1. The hybrid foam zone construction is cut to offer support only where it is needed.
2. The body shaped fit developed via studies of sleeping patterns cuts off all unnecessary weight
3. The new and ultralight 20D Polyester Diamond Rip Stop shell has a high strength to weight ratio.

Our Verdict

The Nordisk Grip 2.5 Regular is an ultralight sleeping mat designed to provide support and coverage to ensure a good night’s sleep. This trimmed-down body-shaped pad is not everyone’s favourite, especially if you are a side sleeper, but this is an ideal pad for trips when a low weight and pack size are essential. 

Very simple to use, the mat inflates itself but can be helped with a lung full of air. You can have the mat up incredibly quickly, and it’s fast to put it away when it’s time to break camp. I would only really use this mat in the warmer months of the year. Its low weight and low price make this a very good mat, especially if you are new to lightweight camping and are looking to purchase your first mat.

STM R-Value:

From 2020, there is a new industry standard for measuring the R-value (level of insulation) of sleeping mats – ASTM F3340-18. This new standard is the sleeping mat equivalent to the EN rating for sleeping bags.

You can now directly compare the R-value of mats rated using the ASTM F3340-18 with confidence that is a fair and accurate comparison between mats. In simple terms, the higher the R-value, the warmer the mat.

In general terms, an R-value below 2.0 is for summer use, 2.0 to 4.0 is for cooler 3 season use and 4.0+ is for winter temperatures.
